Why the Wrong Technique Makes Things Worse
Wildfire soot particles are extremely fine and carry a surface charge. When you wipe a sooty surface with a damp cloth, several damaging things happen simultaneously: the moisture activates acidic compounds in the soot and accelerates etching and staining; the wiping motion grinds particles deeper into the surface texture; and spreading the residue across a wider area creates a thin, difficult-to-remove film rather than a concentrated deposit.
On painted drywall, this can create permanent staining that bleeds through multiple coats of paint. On wood trim and cabinets, it drives pigment into the grain. Ceilings can develop dark rings that no household cleaner will fully remove.

Before You Touch Anything: HEPA Vacuum First

A HEPA filter captures 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns and larger. Standard shop vacs exhaust fine soot particles back into the air, worsening air quality. Rent a HEPA vacuum from a restoration supply company if you do not own one.
Vacuuming sequence: ceilings first, then walls, then floors. When vacuuming, always work top to bottom so dislodged particles fall onto surfaces not yet cleaned.
The Correct Soot Removal Sequence
Following these steps in the correct order helps prevent permanent staining:
- HEPA vacuum the entire room (ceilings to floors) before touching any surface.
- Apply a dry chemical sponge (also called a soot sponge or chemical dry sponge) to walls and ceilings. Use long, parallel strokes without scrubbing. Fold the sponge to a clean face when it becomes soiled. Do not use water or any liquid at this stage.
- Once dry sponging is complete, apply an alkaline cleaner (TSP solution, pH 11-12) to walls, ceilings, and hard surfaces with a soft sponge/rag. Work bottom to top to prevent etching from dripping cleaner. Frequently replace your rag when cleaning.
- For heavily contaminated areas, additional dry-sponging or wet-cleaning passes may be needed depending on the remaining residue and the surface.
- Allow surfaces to dry completely before assessing whether encapsulant primer will be required before repainting. It is rare that encapsulating primer does not need to be used.
Critical rule: Do not paint or apply primer until all soot has been removed and any odor treatment is complete. Paint applied over residual soot and smoke compounds will not adhere properly and will allow odor to bleed through over time.

Melamine sponges are abrasive and can remove soot, but they may also abrade the paint surface underneath, creating micro-scratches that trap more soot over time. Q: How many times do I need to clean a surface?
For light smoke exposure on painted walls, one to two passes with a chemical sponge followed by a wet clean is usually enough. Moderate or heavy exposure typically needs multiple passes. The benchmark: the surface should show no visible soot transfer onto a clean white cloth when wiped.
Q: Will odor-blocking primer cover smoke stains?
Odor-blocking primers, such as shellac-based BIN, are excellent at sealing odor and light staining.
