How to Prevent Water Damage: Simple Fixes That Save Thousands

If you’re wondering how to prevent water damage – one of the most common and costly issues homeowners can face – before it becomes a serious issue, the answer lies in a few simple fixes.

1. Check and Maintain Your Gutters

    • Near your washing machine
    • Next to your water heater
    • On basement floors
  • Smart leak detectors – Send real-time alerts and can trigger an alarm or a smart shut-off valve (if you have one) when there is an issue. Easy to integrate into smart home systems (may involve a licensed plumber for setup).
  • Leak sensors with probe cables – Allow for more flexible placement than standard sensors, meaning they can detect water in hard-to-reach places. Best when used:
    • Under appliances
    • Inside cabinets
    • Around sump pumps
  • Flow-based monitoring systems – Often installed on your main water line to identify unusual flow patterns and detect leaks you might miss. Great for leaks that:
    • Occur behind walls or underground
    • Aren’t immediately visible
  • Smart water shut-off valves – A device that can shut off water remotely when it detects a leak. Great for:
    • Vacation properties
    • Homes with frequent leak risks
